Through these observations the Italian philosopher-scientist concluded that the heavens were not perfect and immutable:  he observed lunar mountains\, phases of Venus\, Jupiter’s moons\, and even sunspots.     The two small pieces of glass revealed a Universe that was far more complex than previously assumed. The Two Small Pieces of Glass program shows how telescopes work; and how astronomers have used them to scrutinize the structures within our cosmos.  Show length: 23 minutes \n  \nGet tickets online here: https://university-of-southern-maine.ticketleap.com/two-small-pieces-of-glass-the-amazing-telescope/dates/Apr-09-2024_at_0100PM URL:/calendar-of-events/event/two-small-pieces-of-glass/2024-04-09/ LOCATION:Maine CATEGORIES:Planetarium ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:/calendar-of-events/wp-content/uploads/sites/34/2022/12/GTC-1440x864-1.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20240409T133000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20240409T150000 DTSTAMP:20250722T192233 CREATED:20230811T131203Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240328T152349Z UID:10020304-1712669400-1712674800@usm.maine.edu SUMMARY:Gorham Campus Tour DESCRIPTION:Get to know the University of Southern Maine (USM) Gorham campus with a 75-minute guided walking tour with a USM Ambassador — one of our student tour guides. \nLocated in a charming New England village just 10 miles west of Portland\, our Gorham campus is home to our residence halls and Division III Athletics facilities. \nWHAT TO EXPECT ON TOUR\n– Dress appropriately for New England weather and wear comfortable walking shoes.\n– At this time face masks are optional for students\, faculty\, staff and visitors \nPARKING\n-Parking on campus is free of charge.\n– On our Gorham campus\, visitor parking is available near the water tower. Donations can be made in person or online. Suggested donation is $10 general\, $5 students\, seniors\, USM employees and alumni\, and $25 for a family. \nPresented by the Osher School of Music\, the concert will include: the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra and Portland Youth Wind Ensemble\, conducted by Will Kinne\, OSOM director of bands; and the Portland Young People’s String Consort and Portland Youth Junior Orchestra\, conducted by Hanna Flewelling.  \nRSVP NOW\, tickets are required\, and donations help to support the youth ensembles.  \n“The Portland Youth Ensembles concerts are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate a vibrant musical community made up of talented young musicians\, an engaged university and thriving music programs in area schools\,” says Alan Kaschub\, director of the USM School of Music. \n“The energy of these performances comes from a dedicated group of students and fantastic conductors who love working with young musicians\,” Kaschub continues. “Add into that an audience of parents\, teachers and other supporters of youth music and something magical really happens! \n“Thanks to excellent grade-school\, junior-high and high-school music teachers\, private instructors and parental support\, these students arrive at the USM School of Music well prepared to perform the challenging music that our conductors program\,” Kaschub said. \nEach week the high and middle school students in the youth ensembles program travel from as far away as central Maine and eastern New Hampshire to rehearse at the Osher School of Music in Gorham in preparation for their concerts. It’s a commitment that these students and their parents make because of the high quality of musicianship that is expected of them — and they achieve. \nFor information about USM Youth Ensembles and auditions\, go to: \nhttp://www.usm.maine.edu/osher-school-music/youth. \nIf you have questions about disability access or need to request disability accommodations (e.g. sign language interpreters\, materials in electronic format\, etc.)\, please contact the USM Music Box Office\, (207) 780-5555\, loria@maine.edu\, TTY 711 (Maine Relay).  Requests should be made as soon as possible to allow sufficient time for the accommodation process.    URL:/calendar-of-events/event/osher-school-of-music-presents-the-portland-youth-ensembles-spring-concert/ LOCATION:Merrill Auditorium\, 20 Myrtle St\, Portland\, ME\, 04101\, United States CATEGORIES:Student activities,Visual and performing arts ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:/calendar-of-events/wp-content/uploads/sites/34/2024/02/Portland-Youth-Ensembles-set2-scaled.jpg ORGANIZER;CN="Music Box Office":MAILTO:usm.music@maine.edu GEO:45.253783;-69.4454689 X-APPLE-STRUCTURED-LOCATION;VALUE=URI;X-ADDRESS=Merrill Auditorium 20 Myrtle St Portland ME 04101 United States;X-APPLE-RADIUS=500;X-TITLE=20 Myrtle St:geo:-69.4454689,45.253783 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20240411T190000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20240411T210000 DTSTAMP:20250722T192233 CREATED:20240127T074834Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240328T175455Z UID:10023125-1712862000-1712869200@usm.maine.edu SUMMARY:The Prom\, Collaboration of Department of Theatre and Osher School of Music DESCRIPTION:  \nTickets on Sale Soon \nApril 5-14\, 2024 at Russell Hall\, Gorham Campus\nThe Prom\nBook & Lyrics by Chad Beguelin\nBook by Bob Martin\nMusic by Matthew Sklar\nBased on an original concept by Jack Viertel\nOriginal Broadway Production directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw\nOriginally Produced on Broadway by Bill Damaschke\, Dori Berinstein\, Jack Lane\n\nDirected by Danny Hutchins\nMusical Direction by Edward Reichert \nFriday\, April 5 at 7 p.m. \nSaturday\, April 6 at 7 p.m. \nSunday\, April 7 at 2 p.m. \nWednesday\, April 10 at 10 a.m. \nThursday\, April 11 at 7 p.m. \nFriday\, April 12 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. \nSaturday\, April 13 at 7 p.m. \nSunday\, April 14 at 2 p.m. \nPresented as a collaboration of the USM Department of Theatre and the Osher School of Music \nFour eccentric Broadway stars desperately need to revitalize their stalling careers.
